How to buy grass fed beef
HoWa Farms Grass Fed Beef is sold off of our farm and can be purchased by the piece, quarter, half, or whole cow. If you are interested in purchasing beef, please sign up on our email list. When we get close to a harvest date, an email notice is sent to our customers on our email list, letting them know that we will have beef available for purchase and the approximate weights and costs. We will also post harvest information and dates on our website on the current news page.
Beef is sold on a first come, first served basis. Please note that If you are interested in purchasing beef, we recommend that you reserve and send in your deposit once the harvest notices are sent out, as we often sell out quickly.
Beef by the piece
HoWa Farms is now selling beef by the piece. Please call numbers above for current pricing and availability.
Weight
Our quarter, half or whole beeves are sold based on the “hanging” weight of the beef. The average hanging weight of a whole beef normally ranges between 475-600 pounds. Quarters usually average 110-150lbs. Please remember the final weight after processing will be approximately 30-40% less than the hanging weight, due to shrinkage from aging, boning, trimming, etc. For example, a quarter of a cow with a hanging weight of 130 lbs will actually end up being approximately 75-85 pounds of packaged beef that you will take home.
Cuts-
Cuts will vary however the following are common cuts normally included in a quarter of beef:
- 24 Packages 1-1.5lbs/package chopped, ground beef
- 2-3 Chuck Roasts (3-4lbs each)
- 2 Shoulder Roasts (3-4lbs each) 2-3 Filets (1 1/2" thick)
- 3-4 Bone In New York Strips (1 1/4"thick)
- 2 Sirloin Steaks (1' thick)
- 3-4 Rib Steaks (Delmonico with bone in) (1 1/4"thick)
- 1-2 Packages of Soup Bones
- 1-2 Packages of stew meat
The above cuts are estimates and will vary from cutting to cutting. Please ask what will be included when purchasing a quarter.
Half or whole cow
If you are purchasing a half or whole cow, you can specify how you would like the meat cut, depending on availability and timing of order.
Space needed to store beef
A quarter of beef usually fits in the freezer section of a conventional refrigerator, if there is nothing else in it.
